In the largest increase in recent times, the Center increased the additional special tax, the cessation of roads and infrastructure on gasoline and diesel by Rs 10 per liter and Rs 13 per liter, respectively. However, the government later issued a note saying that retail prices will not change due to increased tariffs.

The new rates will apply from 6 am on Wednesday. Gasoline prices have remained unchanged at Rs 69.59 per liter in the country since the closure began on March 21 and diesel remained at Rs 62.29 per liter.
The move comes as the government begins taking revenue-raising measures for post-COVID economic reconstruction.
While the excise duty on gasoline increased by Rs 2 per liter, on diesel it increased by Rs 5 per liter.
The cessation of the highway and the infrastructure on both transportation fuels were increased by Rs 8 each, according to a government notification issued Tuesday night.
The move comes a month after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman obtained the amendment to the 2020 finance bill to increase the limit up to which the government can raise excise duties on gasoline and diesel to Rs 18 per liter and Rs 12, respectively.
Earlier in the day, the Delhi government raised VAT on Tuesday, raising gasoline prices to Rs 71.26 per liter and diesel to Rs 69.39 per liter.
