New Delhi:

The Union government has extended the mandate of the Director of the Directorate of Enforcement Sanjay Kumar Mishra for one year after modifying his appointment order that was issued in 2018, authorities said.

Mishra, 60, is a 1984 Indian Revenue Service Officer from Income Tax cadre and was appointed Head of Enforcement Directorate on November 19, 2018.

His term would end next week, as the post of director of ED has a fixed term of two years.

According to an order issued by the Revenue Department of the Union Ministry of Finance on Friday, the 2018 order for Mishra’s appointment has been amended.

“The President of India is pleased to approve the amendment to the previous order of November 19, 2018, appointing Shri Sanjay Kumar Mishra as Director of Enforcement in the Enforcement Directorate,” he said.

He added that his appointment will be for a period of three years from the date of taking office or until new orders, whichever occurs first.

ED is a central investigative agency that enforces two core laws: the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Exchange Administration Act (FEMA).

These laws were enacted to curb money laundering, terrorist financing, black money, and hawala or illegal financial transactions that have cross-border ramifications.
