Mumbai The Maharashtra government may extend the blockade in the coronavirus-affected urban areas of the state after May 3, an official said Sunday.
The state government is closely monitoring the situation in areas outside the cities of Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Amravati, a senior state official said.
“It is in the cities where the majority of COVID-19 cases are concentrated. If the state has to relax its current strict closure measures, it would be in the rural and least affected areas of the state. However, we are seeing the scenario as rural and urban areas are connected, “he said.
Despite minimal COVID-19 cases in rural Pune district, industries there have not resumed because the majority of its workforce lives in cities, he said.
We need to come up with some plans for each city or district for everything to work. The administration needs more time to find solutions, therefore it is highly unlikely that it will lift the closure restrictions from May 3 onwards in all parts of the state, the official said.
State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said Saturday that the number of COVID-19 cases in the state is not decreasing.
“The state has not yet reached a stage where the number of coronavirus cases stabilizes. Until then, we cannot risk allowing people to gather in public places in large numbers,” Tope said.
However, the minister said the state government would make a collective decision on what to do once the national shutdown ends on May 3.
