Not only UPMs, academic institutions, and public sector banks, but also the three armed forces – Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy – have contributed greatly to the PM-CARES Fund. Together, the three services contributed Rs 203.67 crore to their staff’s one-day salary.
While the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy provided information to The Indian Express under the RTI Act, the Indian Army did not respond to RTI’s request. However, he posted a Twitter message on May 15 about his contribution.
The IAF, in its response on November 25, stated that a total of Rs 29.18 crore was contributed from April to October “by IAF staff to the PM Cares Fund”.
He provided a monthly breakdown of his contribution: April: Rs 25.03 crore; May: 75.24 lakh rupees; June: Rs 1.08 crore; July: Rs 73.93 lakh; August: Rs 61.18 lakh; September: Rs 50.27 lakh; and, October: Rs 46.70 lakh.
The Indian Navy, in its reply on December 9, stated that between April and October, a total of Rs 12.41 crore was contributed to the PM-CARES Fund “in respect of officers and sailors” and Rs 4.36 crore “with respect to civilian personnel” of the Navy. The Integrated Headquarters under the Ministry of Defense (Navy) declared that “the contribution of other chiefs is not available at the corresponding address.”
The Indian Army did not respond to RTI’s request, but its ADG PI (Additional Directorate General of Public Information) tweeted on May 15: “#IndianArmy staff have voluntarily contributed Rs 157.71 Crores as the salary of a day for April 2020 for the # Nation fight against # COVID-19 Pandemic at the #PMCARES fund ”.
On March 29, a press release from the Ministry of Defense, issued by the Press Information Office, read: “Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has approved a proposal for the contribution of one day’s salary by Ministry employees. of Defense to the PM- CARES Fund to fight against Covid-19. It is estimated that the Ministry of Defense will collectively provide around 500 million rupees to the fund of various wings, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Defense and other power supply units. The contribution of employees is voluntary and those who wish to opt out will be exempt ”.
It was tweeted the same day by Secretary of Defense Ajay Kumar, who said: “Min of Defense, Armed Forces, Deputy Offices, PSU / Defense Organizations come forward to donate a day’s salary to the PM CARES Fund on a voluntary basis. From April / May 2020 salary ~ Rs 500 crore to PM CARES Fund “.
Previously, RTI responses showed contributions of Rs 204.75 crore from seven public banks and other financial institutions, including the Reserve Bank of India, plus Rs 21.81 crore from various central educational institutions, all of them of staff salaries. A total of 101 PSU contributed Rs 154.70 crore of wages while 98 contributed a total of Rs 2,422.87 crore from CSR funds.
