Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is set to join the Legislative Council without opposition after Congress said Sunday that he would withdraw one of his two candidates for the May 21 election to nine seats.

“We have decided to present only one out of every two nominees for the MLC elections, which means that the MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress) will have five nominees for the same number of seats (out of nine)” , The president of the state Congress, Balasaheb Thorat, was quoted by PTI.

Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had said Thackeray was unwilling to challenge the legislative council’s polls unless he was elected without opposition, adding that the ruling alliance’s partner, Congress, He was adamant about contesting two seats, which would likely force competition.

The BJP has presented four candidates.

The coalition government in Maharashtra had asked Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to nominate Thackeray for the legislative council.

On April 30, the governor closed the nomination door for Thackeray and asked the Election Commission to hold elections for nine seats to the state legislative council as soon as possible to end political uncertainty in the state.

Thackeray, who took over as prime minister on November 28, is not a member of either chamber of the legislature and must be elected to one of the houses before May 28 to keep his job.
