Chennai Corporation officials said Kumaran Silks was sealed when a large crowd packed the showroom on Sunday, and the staff did not implement any COVID-19 safety regulations.
Chennai Corporation officials sealed off the Kumaran Silks showroom in T. Nagar on Tuesday morning. The textile showroom was sealed for overcrowding and for not complying with COVID-19 regulations: compliance with the rules of physical distancing and the use of masks among customers.
A senior official from the Corporation’s Kodambakkam area said complaints were received about large crowds crowding the Kumaran Silks showroom on Sunday, and showroom officials did not implement any crowd control measures. With the city still under lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, overcrowding in the showroom would increase the threat of spreading the virus among its visitors.
Per instructions from Corporation Commissioner G. Prakash, the showroom was sealed Tuesday morning, he said. The official said the showroom will remain sealed until the commissioner receives new orders.
On Monday, videos of overcrowding and clients who did not uphold the rules of physical distancing were widely shared on social media.
