Hyderabad:
The chilling latest phone call from a man trapped in his car while being washed away by floods has emerged from Hyderabad, where heavy rains this week left roads and buildings flooded and cars submerged, often washed away by powerful currents.
The phone call to his friend was possibly the man’s last; he was found dead on Thursday.
In the call, the man, identified as Venkatesh Goud, is heard asking his friend to send someone for help, as his car is caught in a strong current, and only a tree stops him. “The car’s tires have risen. The car has filled with water,” he is heard saying.
His friend, who seems anxious, urges Mr. Goud to climb a compound wall or hold on to a nearby tree.
Mr. Goud responds negatively. “Yes, I can see the compound. But if I get out of the car, I go (due to the strong currents). Even a tree that was stopping the car is gone now. The car is pulling away,” he says.
“Please be brave. Nothing will happen to you,” his friend assures him as he watches helplessly as the car drives away.
The one minute forty four second phone call ends with his friend making a desperate call to save the man. Mr. Goud’s body was later found.
Thirty-one people have been killed by heavy rains in Hyderabad, including a two-month-old baby. At least 50 deaths have occurred in Telangana.
Recently, a horrifying video of a man being washed away by floods appeared in Barkas, near Falaknuma. Two people could be seen, who managed to find refuge on an elevated path, watching helplessly as the man was carried away by the current.
According to the PTI news agency, the man was later safely rescued with the help of police and locals.
In another case, a 54-year-old man, Tahir Qureshi, says he fell into the raging waters while trying to cross the street to his neighbor’s house along with eight other members of his family at 1 a.m. Wednesday. His brother tried to help him and also lost his balance. One by one, they were all swept away. Tahir Qureshi managed to grab onto a tree a kilometer away and survived. So far the bodies of four of his relatives have been found.
