New Delhi:
The new parliament building will be built by Tata Projects at a cost of Rs 861.90 crore.
The Tatas beat Larsen and Toubro, who had submitted an offer of 865 million rupees.
The Central Department of Public Works today opened financial tenders for the construction of a new parliament building.
The project is likely to be completed in a year.
The civic body of the government had estimated a cost of Rs 940 crore.
The new building is said to be designed as a triangle.
The current Parliament Building, built during the British era, is circular. The building would be used for other purposes after it is repaired and renovated, officials say.
Earlier this year, the government had justified its decision to build a new parliament building by saying that the current structure “showed signs of distress and overuse.”
Furthermore, the Lok Sabha is likely to have more numbers after the reorganization of electoral districts, and the current building did not have space for an additional member in the house, the government said in response to questions from the opposition.
The new parliament building is part of the downtown central view beautification project that has sparked protests from the opposition and has also been challenged in court.
