Tamil Nadu’s Covid-19 count crosses the 5 lakh mark; the death toll reaches 8,381


Tamil Nadu’s overall Covid-19 count on Sunday crossed the unenviable milestone of 5 lakh of cases. With 5,693 new cases detected in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 count is 5,02,759.

74 more deaths in the state in one day bring the death toll from Covid-19 to 8,381. The southern state of India has 47,012 active cases.

5,717 discharges in the past 24 hours brought the total number of recoveries to 4,47,366, the state health department said in its daily bulletin.

There are 168 Covid-19 testing facilities in the state, of which 103 are private.

Up to 84,308 specimens were tested on Sunday, bringing the total number of samples tested so far to 58.88 lakh. Meanwhile, the state capital, Chennai, registered 994 new cases, bringing its infection count closer to the 1.5 lakh mark. Additionally, Coimbatore recorded 490 new cases, followed by Salem 309, Thiruvallur 300, Chengalpet 299, Tirupur 291 and Cuddalore 251, according to the bulletin. Erode, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Tirunelveli, Vellore and Villupuram registered more than 100 cases.

Among the 74 who died today from the virus, 66 had comorbidities. Up to 43 deceased were between 60 and 79 years old, the bulletin said. Seven of the new infections that tested positive for COVID-19 were returnees from various states, he said. Of the 8,381 deaths reported to date, 2,976 people were from Chennai.
