Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has stood firm in pursuing the dual language policy of Tamil and English in the state and will not back down, Chief Minister K Palanisamy said Wednesday.
Responding to the opposition DMK in the state Assembly on the New Education Policy (NEP), he said that the government would take a position on the matter based on the recommendations of the two expert committees constituted by the government to advise on the political response in all the impulse areas. policy, subject to Tamil Nadu continuing its dual language policy.
“Two expert committees have already been formed and they are on task. We will take a position based on their recommendations. At that time we will also consider their suggestions,” Palanisamy said in response to the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, MK Stalin, who moved a special motion to call attention to NEP.
The three-language formula in NEP 2020 revealed by the Center has encountered opposition in Tamil Nadu over the alleged “imposition of Hindi,” even as the ruling AIADMK has made clear that it will only follow the two-language system in vogue in the state for decades. .
Claiming that the NEP attaches importance to Sanskrit and encourages the Hereditary Occupation System, Stalin demanded a special session of the assembly to discuss the NEP and pass a resolution against it.
He also noted that a book on herbs distributed to members today contained Hindi in addition to Tamil and English.
In response, Health Minister Dr. C Vijaya Baskar said that the senior minister has made it clear that a bilingual policy will be implemented in Tamil Nadu.
Regarding the Hindi text in the book on herbs distributed to the MLA by the health department, the minister explained that the book was published by the Union Ayush ministry.
School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan noted that a letter has already been written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that Tamil Nadu will follow the dual language policy.
