Tamil Nadu reports 580 cases of Covid-19 and two more deaths; large number of cases linked to the Koyambedu market

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu on Thursday reported a marginal drop in the number of cases with 580 people in the state testing positive for the new coronavirus. This occurs after the state reported the highest peak in cases on Wednesday with 771 people testing positive for the infection.

Total cases in the state have touched 5,409 cases and with two more deaths reported, the number of deaths has risen to 37, a government media bulletin confirmed.

Among the deaths, one was a 56-year-old woman who had comorbidities from Thiruvallur who died at Kilpauk MCH in Chennai yesterday. Another was a 48-year-old woman with comorbidities from Chennai who died today at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH).

Chennai represented 316 of the 580 cases and touched a whopping 2,644 cases on Thursday. The second highest number of cases was reported from Thiruvallur, which registered 63 people contracting the virus.

Chennai has 2,281 active cases and 23 deaths have also been reported so far in the district.

A large number of these cases have been linked to the Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai, which was open during the shutdown.

So far, 273 children under the age of 12 have also tested positive in the state.

The government said 31 patients were released on Thursday, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,547.

So far, 2,02,436 samples and 1.92, 574 people have been analyzed. On Thursday alone 14,195 samples were analyzed, the highest so far.
