CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu the government moved on Saturday the Supreme Court contesting a provisional judgment of the Madras High Court to close liquor outlets managed by state companies Tasmac.
Following violations of the conditions imposed by the court, the higher court said that liquor stores it will remain open until the closing imposed by the Center and the state government is lifted or modified.
“It is relevant that in the state of Tamil Nadu, all the liquor retail trade is owned and operated by Tasmac. Therefore, the net effect of the supreme court order is the total and indefinite suspension of liquor sales in the state, causing serious losses to the state’s income and commercial activity in the state, “said the petition.
The ruling is contrary to the letter and spirit of the SC order, which recognized that the regulation of this commercial activity in current circumstances is the prerogative of the state and not of the courts, the state argued.
The government said that the scope of judicial overreach in the present case would have the effect of stifling significant commercial activity in the state.
