Tamil Nadu was the fourth state in India to register more than 6,000 coronavirus cases. Up to 600 people tested positive for the new coronavirus in the past 24 hours, raising the COVID-19 count in the state to 6,009.

The state health minister, C Vijayabaskar, attributed “aggressive evidence” behind this sudden increase in the coronavirus count. Tamil Nadu analyzed 2,16,416 samples as of Friday, the highest in the entire country, Vijayabaskar said. Maharashtra, the worst-affected state in the coronavirus pandemic with 19,000 cases, carried out 2,16,416 samples until Friday.

“We are doing more tests than the states that have more population and that is why a series of new positive cases are emerging,” added the Tamil Nadu health minister. Test facilities in Tamil Nadu were the highest in India at 52, including 36 in government and 16 in the private sector.

The total number of active cases in the state was 4,361. At least 1,605 people recovered from the diseases. “The public does not need to have apprehensions about the number of positive cases,” said the minister.

At least 40 people died in Tamil Nadu due to coronavirus disease. Tamil Nadu’s death rate was 0.68%, which showed a high level of vigilance and quality of treatment, Vijayabaskar said.

The state witnessed a large increase in coronavirus cases after the Koyembedu market in Chennai emerged as the last COVID-19 access point. More than 1,500 people linked to the Koyembedu market confined positive for COVID-19 infection. Tamil Nadu constantly added more than 500 new cases of COVID-19 every day during the week.

Chennai reported the highest number of coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu. The city recorded nearly 400 cases on Friday, bringing the COVID-19 count to 3,043. Cuddalore continued to be the second district to add the largest number of coronavirus cases.

The Madras Superior Court on Friday ordered the closure of the Tasmac liquor stores until the closure is lifted. The court allowed the sale of alcohol through both online and home delivery modes. The court approved the order in view of the violation of the closing regulations, particularly the social distancing in the liquor stores. The Tamil Nadu government allowed alcohol stores to reopen on May 7 after a month-long shutdown.
