Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka are preparing for a cyclone, which is expected to hit their coastal cities on Wednesday. For more than two days, a low pressure system prevailed in the southern Bay of Bengal.
On Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said the system had intensified into a depression and was located 630 kilometers south-southeast of Chennai.
“It is expected to move northwest and cross the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry between Karaikal and Mamallapuram on November 25,” said the IMD bulletin issued at 9.30 am on Monday.
Once reinforced, the cyclone will be called Cyclone Nivar, a name proposed by Iran.
The meteorological department has also warned of strong winds over Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and northeast Sri Lanka as the system approaches the east coast in the next few hours.
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal remain on ‘red’ alert with the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall forecasts on November 25, while an ‘orange’ alert prevails for Rayalaseema, Telangana, southern interior Karnataka and the coast. from Andhra Pradesh, where heavy rains are forecast for November 24-26.
The fishing community has been warned to head out into the seas until Wednesday.

It will be the second cyclone to form in the Bay of Bengal in 2020 after Super Cyclone Amphan crossed the West Bengal coast in May.
