The Tamil Nadu government banned online gaming in the state on Friday. Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit issued an ordinance late Friday following a decision made by the state government.
According to the ordinance, those found gambling will be punished with a fine of 5,000 rupees and six months in prison. Those who host ordinary gambling houses will be punished with a fine of Rs 10,000 and two years in prison. The ordinance also prohibits the electronic transfer of funds used for gambling and wagering, distribution of winnings, prize money, etc. It also states that the people who run the company that makes online games through betting and betting will be punished.
“Due to online games, innocent people, mainly young people, are being cheated and some people have committed suicide. To prevent such suicidal incidents and protect innocent people from the evils of online gaming, the Government has submitted a proposal to the Honorable Governor to enact an ordinance by amending the Gaming Act of Tamil Nadu, 1930 (Act III of Tamil Nadu of 1930), The Chennai City Police Act of 1888 (Tamil Nadu Act III of 1888) and the Tamil Nadu District Police Act of 1859 (Tamil Nadu Act XXIV of 1859) ”, it read Raj Bhavan’s statement.
This comes weeks after the state government informed the Madurai Court of the Madras High Court that it was actively considering banning online gambling.
