Surge in 6 states, Maharashtra is the hardest hit: India’s Covid situation on 6 lists | India News

NEW DELHI: A marginal, but steady increase in daily coronavirus cases has stoked new concerns in India, even as the country has expanded its vaccination campaign to include seniors and those over 45 with comorbid illnesses.
Here’s a snapshot of India’s Covid-19 situation in 6 charts
6 states lead the rise of Covid
Six states – Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat – continue to see an increase in new infections, accounting for 87% of new cases in the past 24 hours.

The two most affected states, Kerala and Maharashtra, account for almost two-thirds of all active cases in the country. These are the only two states with more than 10,000 active cases, according to data from the Health Ministry.
Similarly, 87% of the 106 deaths reported in the past 24 hours were reported in the same six states.

Maharashtra recorded the highest number of victims with 62, followed by Kerala (15) and Punjab (7).
Several states report upward trajectory
India reported 15,510 new cases on Monday, and Maharashtra posted the highest daily count at 8,293.
Kerala followed with 3,254 cases, while Punjab recorded 579 new infections.

In addition to Maharashtra, states such as Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat have witnessed a gradual increase in new infections in recent days.
Grim situation in Maharashtra
With more than 8,000 new cases daily over the past 5 days, the coronavirus situation in the worst-hit state in India remains grim.

This, even as the state government and local administrations have begun to take various measures to slow the spread of the virus.
The state accounts for nearly half of India’s active cases and 58% of new daily deaths.

Prime Minister Uddhav Thackery had recently warned that his administration will be forced to impose another lockdown if people do not follow appropriate Covid guidelines, such as wearing masks or social distancing.
Center in contact with the states
Meanwhile, the Center has said it is continually collaborating with states and UTs that report higher numbers of active cases and those that see an increase in new cases daily.
The government has advised states / UTs to maintain a continuous rigorous vigil to contain the spread of Covid-19.
“The need for effective testing, comprehensive monitoring, rapid isolation of positive cases, and rapid quarantine of close contacts is strongly emphasized,” the Health Ministry said in a statement.
No recent deaths in 20 states / UT
On the bright side, as many as 21 states / UTs have reported fewer than 1,000 active cases in the last 24 hours. Arunachal Pradesh has not reported any active cases in the last 24 hours.
The government said that twenty states / UTs did not report a single death from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours.

These are Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Puducherry, Assam, Manipur, Sikkim, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Lakshadweep, Meghalaya, Ladakh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Uttarakhand, Daman Dadrahand and Nagar Haveli.
