Suresh Raina’s relative killed in robbery attack, four injured – cricket


A 58-year-old man said to be related to cricketer Suresh Raina died while four members of his family were allegedly injured in an attack by robbers, police said Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Ashok Kumar, a government contractor.

The incident took place in Thariyal village in Punjab’s Pathankot district on the night of August 19 and 20, police said. According to them, three to four members of the notorious Kale Kachhewala gang had come with the intention of looting and attacked Ashok Kumar and his relatives at their home in the village of Thariyal near Madhopur de Pathankot.

At the time of the attack, they were sleeping on the terrace of their house. Ashok Kumar, who had suffered head injuries, died while four others suffered injuries, police said.

Kumar’s death was also confirmed by Pathankot Senior Police Superintendent Gulneet Singh Khurana. As for Kumar’s relationship with cricketer Raina, the SSP said it has no confirmation on the matter. It may be a relative, he said.

“We are investigating the matter,” said the SSP.

According to the police, the robbers fled the house with some cash and gold. Kumar’s mother, Satya Devi, 80, her wife Asha Devi, their children Apin and Kaushal were injured, police said. While Satya Devi has been released from the hospital, others are still in treatment, said Pathankot Police Superintendent Prabhjot Singh Virk.
