The new coronavirus spike that affected the world order also continues to affect the holidays. As India prepares to start the festive season today with Navratri and Durga Pooja soon, followed by Dussehra and Diwali, this year will be a quiet affair due to the pandemic. The Covid-19 spike has forced many state governments to issue strict security protocols and social distancing rules that have clouded the usual fanfare.
The Navratri festival that spans over nine days is celebrated in India under different names. Without the possibility of organizing mega fairs, Ramlila’s shows and the excellent food offered will not be the case this year. In Gujarat, where Navratri celebrations are taking place on a large scale across the state, this year will be a lackluster event. Many look forward to the auspicious nine-day period to dress up, gorge on good food, and dance the night away as they worship the nine avatars of the goddess Durga.
In a rare setback, due to the pandemic, the state government has banned the Garba dance but allowed contactless worship of the Goddess. However, students at a fashion design institute have found a safe solution.
A group of students from the Institute of Design and Technology (IDT) in Surat designed a ‘Covid Garba Dress’. The suit which is made of polypropylene fabric is approved by the South Indian Textile Research Association (SITRA). The two-layer personal protective overalls (PPE) are adorned with hand-painted motifs and mirrors. It also has a face mask and dandiya bars.
The redesigned Covid-19 safe garba suits resemble PPE overalls that resemble those worn by doctors and front-line workers in hospitals. However, this Garba costume in white is covered from head to toe and has multi-colored dupattas and detachable skirts with traditional motifs and sparkling mirrors to add some sparkle, NDTV reported.
The video of Garba’s new costume posted on Twitter has made netizens laugh and many have commented with funny memes.
