A Delhi court on Tuesday accepted the new supplemental indictment filed by Delhi police against Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) academic Umar Khalid and investigator Sharjeel Imam in a conspiracy case related to violence in the northeast. from Delhi.
After considering the charge sheet, the court said there is enough material to proceed against Khalid, Imam and Faizan Khan for crimes under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). They were registered under the provisions of the strict law by the Delhi Police Special Cell.
Police on Sunday had filed a supplemental charge sheet against Khalid and Imam in connection with a larger conspiracy behind the violence that took place in areas of northeast Delhi between February 24 and 26. Both were arrested by the Delhi police.
According to the police, the present case concerns a multi-level conspiracy and pre-planned riots in Delhi. Police have claimed that on March 6, specific information was received in the Crimes Section that the communal riots on February 24-26 in Delhi were planned in advance and that Khalid and his associates plotted them.
More than 750 cases of violence were recorded in northeast Delhi, in which at least 53 people died and several more were injured. So far, more than 250 charge sheets have been filed in riot-related cases in which charges have been brought against 1,153 defendants.
