The Joint Main Entrance Exam, or JEE Main 2020, concluded today.
New Delhi:
Even when the rumor about a possible change or postponement in the main Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) that determines engineering admissions has ended, it appears that the common test was not without its hiccups for the thousands of aspiring engineers across the world. country.
A JEE applicant, Rupam, who lives in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, told Careers360 that her closest test center was 100 km away. She appeared for JEE Main on September 3. “I traveled by bicycle with my father because we did not find safe public transport in the current scenario. I had to leave my house at 4:30 am. During the whole trip I was tense and nervous. Getting to the center on time was the biggest fear, ”Rupam said.
In 2020, the JEE exams were scheduled to take place twice. Once in January and then in April. Applicants were allowed to appear in either or both sessions and only the best grades obtained in any of the rounds of the JEE main exam would be considered for the admissions process.
Controversy over test dates broke out just as India was crossing three million COVID-19 cases. In addition to the protests sparked on social media platforms, the clamor for the postponement of JEE Main also garnered support from various chief ministers of state and opposition parties. However, the Supreme Court rejected JEE Main’s request for postponement and the final date of the examination for September was announced.
Although the National Testing Agency (NTA) issued a series of guidelines for safe testing at various JEE centers across the country, students were still afraid of contracting the virus on the way to the test center, or at the test center. himself, risking their lives and those of their families.
On the other hand, the prolonged lockdown had increased the anxiety of billions of students who had been preparing for exams.
Exam guidelines
According to the candidates, the NTA guidelines were strictly followed in the JEE exam centers, keeping student safety under control.
“There was a strong candidate presence at the Bareilly test center. All security measures were followed, according to NTA. They sanitized us a few times, put masks on us, and social distancing was properly followed. However, the writing paper with a mask was not very comfortable, ”said Rupam.
The arrangements for the students inside the exam room were up to the task, however the parents or guardians accompanying the candidates had to suffer at the center. “Our parents had to suffer a lot. After traveling long distances, they had to stand in hot weather for three hours as there were no shadows and no seating arrangements. As soon as the exam was over, there was a rush outside the center and no social distancing measures were followed, “she added.
Suryansh Shukla, a candidate who took a JEE exam in Bareilly, UP, said that COVID-19 not only attacked our nation physically, it also affected us mentally. “Right now, my competitors and I are not just the JEE hopefuls, we are also the anonymous warriors of our nation,” he said.
“With the news of JEE being postponed in rounds, I was not sure if the exam would take place in September. But after the final decision of the Supreme Court, I began my review. On September 3 I was ready, but this time I was nervous. Corona cases cost more than 35 lakh, and even so, I had to go to the JEE center, write the newspaper, and return home with a full set of PCOS. Those SOPs didn’t work for Amit Shah, Amitabh Bachchan and many alike, but still, I believed in them and appeared on the exam, ”added Suryansh.
Main JEE and COVID-19
Another JEE aspirant from Kolkata, Ritayan Chakrabarti, who wrote the exam on September 3, complained of unnecessary crowding in the center: “At the time of return, some parents were … making an unnecessary crowd at the door, what which, according to me, should have been detained or controlled. “
“After the Supreme Court verdict on conducting the main JEE exam, I decided to prepare accordingly, however I was anxious about a few things such as: how to avoid the crowd we usually expect downtown, the mode of transportation and the amount of sanitary facilities that would be provided at the center. But the arrangements were perfect in every way. The police were on duty and effectively reduced overcrowding. The guidelines were announced through microphones in case someone forgot to adhere to them. Squares were marked to maintain social distancing and HHMD was used for pat-down. Objectionable objects were questioned and students were seated in the alternative system, ”Ritayan added.
On whether it is safe to test right now, Zeaul Haque, who showed up for the JEE test in downtown Kolkata, said: “We cannot just stay inside and wait for the day when there are no more cases. There are many people who go out to work in order to feed their families. We need to adapt to these situations, take all the necessary precautions and comply with the standards designed by the institute and the measures designed by the Government to prevent the spread ”.
