Most of us are now working from home, as the new coronavirus scare has forced us to follow strict guidelines of social distancing. Despite the blockade imposed in various nations, people are making great efforts to work from home to keep their businesses running. It seems that NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) scientists are no different.
The United States, the worst affected nation, has imposed work from home to various institutions, including NASA. This has resulted in scientists executing space operations from their home. This includes one of NASA’s ongoing projects: the Mars Curiosity Rover.
While home operations have their own challenges, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has no choice. “It was the first time that rover operations were planned while the team was completely remote,” said a JPL blog post.
To ensure the smooth running of the project, these scientists rely on various video conferences and text messages. While the entire process takes a little longer than usual, Curiosity is “as scientifically productive as ever.”
The head of the science operations team, Carrie Bridge, said: “I probably supervise about 15 chat channels at all times,” taking a report on the plans for the day. Sometimes, he ends up making four different video calls simultaneously to verify operations.
“It’s classic, NASA textbook. We are presented with a problem and we discover how to make things work. Mars does not stand for us; we are still exploring, “he added.
