BENGALURU: The Karnataka The government has allowed all stores and commercial establishments with 10 or more employees registered under the Karnataka Establishments and Shops Law, 1962, to operate 24×7.
The notification issued on Saturday establishes that the last permit for businesses and establishments is only for three years, which indicates that the decision will be reviewed. It also establishes that the employer must appoint additional personnel “to allow each employee to take advantage of their weekly rest on a rotating basis.”
The state made this decision in accordance with the provisions of the Law and made a partial modification to allow the stores to operate 24 hours a day. Labor Secretary P Manivannan told TOI that this measure is part of the government’s efforts to improve the “ease of doing business.” “It is a welcome decision as it will allow businesses and establishments to do business without stopping …”, said some businessmen.
It will also help drive overall business in the city and state. However, there are concerns about worker safety and facility safety that the government should address.
The unions, while welcoming the measure, argued that the government must ensure that employers do not exploit workers, given that several of these stores and establishments have disorganized workforce.
