Stopping Rahul Gandhi as Party Leader Will Destroy Congress, Says Sanjay Raut

Sena deputy on letter from Congress that sparked a leadership debate

Sanjay Raut said that VN Gadgil described Congress as an old woman who will never die.

Mumbai:

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said on Sunday that preventing Rahul Gandhi from assuming the leadership of Congress will lead to the “extinction” of the big party.

In his weekly Rokhthok column in the Sena Saamana spokesman, Sanjay Raut also said that Congress lacks a leader who can take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi with all his might.

Referring to the letter from 23 congressional leaders to Sonia Gandhi about having “full-time” leadership active in the field and “visible” in the party offices, Sanjay Raut wondered who is preventing these leaders from being active.

“(Actively trying) to stop Rahul Gandhi will be instrumental in destroying the party and leading to its demise,” said Sanjay Raut.

Having someone other than Gandhi as president of Congress is a good idea, but none of those 23 have that capacity, said Sanjay Raut, whose party, along with Congress and the NCP, is a component of the ruling alliance in Maharashtra.

Referring to the regional parties presented by former Congress leaders, Sanjay Raut said: “Congress still exists throughout India but with different masks. If these masks are thrown away, it can emerge as a prominent political party.”

He said the late Congressional veteran VN Gadgil described Congress as an old woman who will never die. “Rahul Gandhi has to decide what to do with the old woman,” added Sanjay Raut.
