States can now use 50% of state disaster relief fund, 35% cap removed, says Prime Minister Modi at meeting on Covid-19 with senior ministers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held a virtual meeting with top ministers from seven states where the burden of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases is highest. He appreciated the efforts made by states to control the spread of the disease and also announced the increase in the limit on the amount they can spend from the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF).

“Today, I announce that states can spend 50 percent of the SDRF amount on efforts to control the spread of Covid-19. This limit was previously 35 percent, “said Prime Minister Modi.

He also emphasized that microzones must be formed for the effective management of coronavirus disease.

Prime Minister Modi further highlighted the importance of masks and said that they are a very important tool in the fight against Covid-19.

“We need to increase our focus on effective testing, tracking, treatment, surveillance and clear messages,” said PM Modi.

“Effective messaging is also necessary because most Covid-19 infections have no symptoms. In such a situation, rumors may arise. It could raise doubts in people’s minds that the tests are bad. Some people also make the mistake of underestimating the severity of the infection, “he added.

The Prime Minister said that India has said that India has ensured the supply of life-saving drugs around the world, even in difficult times. “We have to work together to make sure that drugs get easily from one state to another,” he further said.

States with a high number of Covid-19 cases are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Punjab. The Union’s health ministry said that more than 63 percent of active cases in the country are concentrated in these states.

They also account for 65.5 percent of total confirmed cases and 77 percent of total deaths, a statement previously said.
