Large crowds turned out for a meeting held by the ousted DMK leader, who is also Stalin’s brother, in Madurai on Sunday.
Overthrown DMK leader MK Alagiri announced Sunday before a large gathering of his supporters that party chief MK Stalin will never become prime minister of Tamil Nadu. He claimed that his supporters will not allow this to happen and that Stalin will forever remain just a “future” CM. The leader, whose next political move is being speculated long before the Assembly elections, however, remained cryptic about the possibility of starting his own party.
The former DMK leader had met with his supporters in the Madurai district to discuss his next political step and gather what kind of support he could get. Several political observers commented on social media about the large crowds that filled the event space for the meeting despite the fact that it has been seven years since Alagiri actively participated in state politics.
At the end of the meeting, after hearing various supporters encourage him to start his own party, the leader simply said: “I may or may not announce a good decision. Whether it’s a good or bad decision, you must accept it. I can’t tell if I’m starting a party or not and if it will be sooner or later. It could be like this or like this. “
While remaining cryptic about his next political move, the top leader explained his contribution to the DMK and the support he had given his brother Stalin over the past two decades. He claimed that he had been betrayed and that Stalin could never be compared to Karunanidhi.
Alagiri told the meeting that Stalin had been appointed treasurer of the DMK on recommendation of the then head of the DMK, Karunanidhi. He claimed that his younger brother had been jealous of his promotion to secretary for the southern zone.
“He had even told Stalin that after appa (Karunanidhi), he would become party chief and prime minister,” Alagiri said. “But I don’t know why he betrayed me,” he added.
The former DMK leader said he had never wanted any position in the party. He alleged that he was marginalized and expelled due to a conspiracy hatched out of jealousy.
“You can never become anything other than the ‘future CM’. You will never become the CM. I don’t want to become the CM, but you definitely never will be. My followers will definitely not allow this,” he said, referring to Stalin.
Alagiri had waited several weeks for news from the DMK about the possibility of his rejoining the game before giving up and having a meeting with his supporters in Madurai.
