The funeral of singing legend SP Balasubrahmanyam is currently underway in Chennai. The last rites are being performed with all police honors. SP Balasubrahmanyam died in a Chennai hospital on Friday afternoon. He was 74 years old. Actor Vijay paid his last respects to the legendary singer – he was photographed interacting with SPB’s son, SP Charan, with his hands clasped. Veteran director Bharathiraja, who was also in the hospital last night, attended the funeral and so did singer Mano. The musical composer Devi Sri Prasad and the comedian Mayilsami were also part of the funeral of SP Balasubrahmanyam. Several politicians were seen at the last rites of SP Balasubrahmanyam: AIADMK leader D Jayakumarand and Andhra Pradesh Minister of Irrigation Anil Kumar Yadav attended. On Saturday morning, elaborate security arrangements were made over the funeral, the PTI news agency reported. Mourners flocked to the outskirts of Red Hills Farmhouse to say goodbye to SPB.

On Friday night, SPB was taken to his Red Hills Farmhouse in Thamaraipakkam in the Thiruvallur district in a hearse, when supporters and excited fans followed the vehicle to see off SPB for the last time. PTI reported that the hearse van had to slow down to allow fans to say goodbye to SPB. Before that, the family members paid their last respects to SP Balasubrahmanyam at his residence in Nungambakkam.
SP Balasubrahmanyam is survived by his wife Savitri, daughter Pallavi, and son SP Charan, who is a producer and singer. SP Charan, along with other family members, was seen in the hospital on Friday night.
SP Balasubrahmanyam was admitted to Chennai MGM healthcare hospital for COVID-19 on August 5. The singer tested negative after a few weeks, but continued with the fan. A day before her death, the hospital announced that she was given maximum life support. Kamal Haasan, who had worked a lot with Mr. Subhrahmanyam, visited the hospital on Thursday. Following SPB’s death, social media was filled with poignant tributes from Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Ilaiyaraaja, AR Rahman and various Bollywood stars.
SP Balasubrahmanyam sang more than 40,000 songs in 16 languages and won six national awards. He received the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan.
