CHENNAI: The Reproduction Singer’s Health Status SP Balasubrahmanyam, in treatment for Covid-19 at MGM Healthcare, is extremely critical, doctors said.
“His condition has deteriorated further, which justifies maximum life support,” said the bulletin issued by the assistant director of the hospital, Dr. Anuradha Baskaran. “He remains on ECMO and other life support measures,” he added. SPB was taken to the 11th floor of the hospital and his relatives visited him.
The singer was admitted to the hospital on August 5 with mild symptoms of Covid-19. The same day, the singer posted a video on his social media page saying he was “perfectly fine” but had decided to admit it himself so he could rest undisturbed.
On August 13, after his oxygen saturation abandoned, he was transferred to the intensive care unit and placed on life support. His physician, Dr. V Sabanayagam, consultant and clinical leader for MGM Healthcare, said the singer was given plasma therapy, recommended drugs such as remdesivir, steroids and drugs to prevent blood clots. He was also receiving physical therapy and was frequently kept in the prone position to improve oxygenation.
Five days later, doctors transferred him to a high sterility unit on the sixth floor of the hospital. The singer was connected to life support systems, including a ventilator and ECMO. Doctors at the hospital spoke with experts from the UK and the US for input on managing critically ill patients.
His condition remained critical although he remained stable. “While I was awake I would listen to music,” said a senior doctor. The singer’s son, SP Charan, released a series of video messages assuring people that he hoped his father would recover from the viral infection. On September 8, the hospital said that SPB’s health condition would warrant an extended stay in the intensive care unit. On September 19, his son said his father’s condition was improving, although he was still on life support. “He started taking food by mouth yesterday. That should help him get stronger and take care of other vital signs as well,” he said.
