Veteran replay singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, who has been battling Covid-19 since last month, is in “extremely critical” condition, the hospital treating him said Thursday.
A newsletter from MGM Healthcare in Chennai said his condition has deteriorated, requiring maximum life support.
Affectionately known as SPB, the renowned singer was admitted to the hospital with mild symptoms in early August. At the time, he had posted a video on social media saying he was “perfectly fine.”
On August 13, he was transferred to the intensive care unit when his oxygen saturation level dropped. He has been on life support ever since.
Balasubrahmanyam underwent plasma therapy and physical therapy at a later stage when his condition appeared to be improving.
He remained with a ventilator and ECMO support (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). But although his condition remained critical, he was stable and responsive to doctors.
SPB’s son SP Charan had been spreading information about him frequently. And, as recently as September 19, he had revealed that his father had started taking food by mouth.
“That should help him get stronger and take care of other vital signs as well,” Charan had said.
