Southampton 2-3 Man Utd: Five talking points as Edinson Cavani finishes off with a surprising comeback

Edinson Cavani’s second-half double ensured Manchester United rallied 2-0 against to win at Southampton.

The Uruguayan appeared at halftime and turned out to be the winner of the match.

James Ward-Prowse was a star in the first half as he played a pivotal role in putting the Saints up two goals at halftime.

But United found their mojo in the 45th second with Bruno Fernandes scoring his first before Cavani nodded for the tie.

The Saints scored their goals through Jan Bednarek and the graceful Ward-Prowse, whose set-piece skill came to the fore.

But in injury time, the visitors completed the comeback as Cavani headed home at the near post to seal a dramatic victory.

Here are five talking points from an entertaining showdown on the south coast.

Edinson Cavani was the winner of the match

1. The Man Utd style

They don’t make it easy for you, do they?

At halftime Roy Keane said you never know what he will get from this side of United.

But a hallmark of either side of United is the never-say-die attitude that has defined them for decades.

Those qualities were on show at Southampton as they produced a surprising comeback that saw Edinson Cavani score the winner in overtime.

Despite being behind, United had looked like the best team for much of the contest, so the three points were certainly deserved.

If they could add some consistency to its obvious quality and character, then maybe we could be onto something.

Although it seems like it is still a long way off, they are still a side that can never be discounted.

Bruno Fernandes started the recovery mission

2. Fernandes the fighter

It was that man once again, Fernandes, whose goal dragged United back into contention.

Very often he is the man the Red Devils turn to for inspiration and again he responded.

The Portuguese master, who scored two in the middle of the week, will have been disappointed to miss a golden opportunity in the first half when he was unable to return home after McCarthy saved from Mason Greenwood.

But just before the time it was Fernandes who was found by Cavani in the 18-yard box.

He took the touch once, steadied himself and they engaged.

He gave United a new life and began their fight.

James Ward-Prowse showed his class with a wonderful free kick

3. Cavani proving his worth

The Uruguayan was certainly not helped by the recent Old Trafford narrative when he arrived.

A bigger player now at the end of his career and looking for a great finishing move.

How many times have we seen that story unfold in Manchester with a forgettable ending?

But Cavani, who chose to wear jersey number 7, is showing that there is still a lot of class left.

He is clearly not worried about the pressure, as his two goals got United the game at Southampton.

Both headlines, each showing a move you just can’t teach. A class act.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw his team complete a remarkable comeback

4. Entrance to Henderson’s Man Utd

There has been a clamor for Dean Henderson to replace David de Gea in United’s goal for some time.

The English forward finally made his long-awaited first Premier League outing with the club he has been for a decade.

However, your entry may not have been done in the way you would have liked.

De Gea injured his knee while trying to save Ward-Prowse’s free kick and had to be retired at half-time.

The first time Henderson appeared in the league for United, many may have seen it as a changing of the guard.

However, it has not turned out that way and the young goalkeeper’s stay will probably depend on De Gea’s physical form.

5. Lucky eight

Despite all of United’s struggles in this span, they had won each of their three Premier League away games and did so four on Sunday.

In fact, Solskjaer had seen his team win on the road for the last seven games in a row.

Their draw at Tottenham in June, the last time they failed to score three points in an away game.

Brighton, Newcastle and Everton have been excluded from this period and Southampton is now on that list.

United’s counterattack style is suited to days when they can absorb a little more pressure and utilize their attacking pace.

On Sunday they showed their quality for long periods and showed their character by coming back to score all three points.
