Sourav Ganguly mourns Soumitra Chatterjee’s death and says: ‘You have done so much, you can rest in peace’ – cricket


Former India captain and current BCCI chairman Sourav Ganguly posted a moving message after legendary Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee passed away at the age of 85 in Kolkata on Sunday.

“You’ve done so much … you can rest in peace …” Ganguly tweeted.

Ganguly, one of the city’s most famous sports icons, shared moments with Chatterjee while filming ‘Dadagiri’, a Bengali trivia show hosted by the former captain of India.

Chatterjee passed away this afternoon at the age of 85. He was admitted to Belle Vue Hospital on October 6 and was transferred to the ICU after testing positive for Covid-19. Later, she tested negative, but developed multiple complications.

“We declare with regret that Shri Soumitra Chattopadhyay breathed her last at 12:15 pm at the Belle Vue Clinic today (November 15). We pay our tribute to his soul ”, reads a statement issued by the hospital.

In addition to being an acclaimed actor, winner of several national and international accolades for his performance in more than 300 films, Chatterjee was also an exponent of recitation.

Known for his collaborations with Oscar-winning film director Satyajit Ray, Chatterjee became synonymous with the detective character ‘Feluda’ created by Ray.

Although Feluda’s first appearance was in a series of detective books written by Ray, the teacher later decided to make it celluloid and Chatterjee starred in all of Ray’s films about Feluda. Later, Ray began making illustrations of Feluda in his books based on the Chatterjee figure.

Chatterjee was awarded the prestigious Padmabhushan in 2004 and in 2012 he was awarded the Dadasahe Phalke Prize, India’s highest award in film given annually by the Government of India for his lifetime contribution to Indian cinema.
