Sourav Ganguly is stable, had dinner hours after coronary angiography

Former India Captain and Chairman of the Cricket Control Board in India (BCCI) Sourav Ganguly, 48, was stable and had a light dinner hours after undergoing coronary angiography at 3pm Saturday at a hospital private in Calcutta, where he was detected with three blocked arteries.

Woodlands Hospital officials said around midnight Saturday that the percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCS) and right coronary artery stenting was performed radially.

Subsequently, revasculation will be performed towards the left anterior descending artery and the obtuse marginal artery. Doctors will decide on Monday how to treat them. Authorities said there is a history of heart disease in Ganguly’s family.

Ganguly, recognized as one of the best captains in India, was working out in his home gym when he felt sick and dizzy around 11 a.m.

Dr. Rupali Basu, MD and CEO of Woodlands, said in a statement Saturday at midnight that Ganguly arrived at the emergency department around 1 p.m. He had chest discomfort and had vomited while exercising.

The ECG report showed an acute myocardial infarction of the inferolateral wall, and echocardiography pointed to mild hypokinesis of the inferior wall. Ganguly tested negative for Covid-19.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, several cabinet ministers rushed to the hospital to visit Ganguly at night.

The leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party also asked about Ganguly’s health. BJP National Secretary General Kailash Vijayvargiya said Union Interior Minister Amit Shah told BJP state leaders that the Center would make available all necessary facilities for Ganguly’s treatment.

Ganguly is the most prominent public figure whose name has been circulating in Bengal political circles as the likely main ministerial face of the BJP for the crucial assembly elections to be held in a few months. Ganguly, however, dismissed speculation, although he never categorically ruled out the possibility of joining politics. Speculation was fueled by the fact that Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah is the secretary of the BCCI.

“I can’t believe that such a fit athlete can have a heart attack. He smiled at me and asked about my health. I came to know that he never underwent any precautionary tests. This should be mandatory for all cricketers, ”said Mamata Banerjee after visiting Ganguly.

The VIP patient in bed # 516 is being treated by Dr. Saroj Mandal, Dr. Soutik Panda and Dr. Saptarshi Basu. Doctors decided to restrict the entry of visitors from Sunday so that Ganguly can get some rest.

Ganguly has been the president of BCCI since October 2019. His older brother Snehasish was also a first-class cricketer and is now a trustee of the Bengal Cricket Association.
