NEW DELHI: With the Chairman of the Cricket Board of India (BCCI) Sourav Ganguly Faced with pressure from an alleged ‘conflict of interest’ in its multiple brand deals, it was discovered that Ganguly had to reject deals from core sponsors of BCCI.
Over the past year, Ganguly’s involvement with brands that are direct rivals of the BCCI sponsor has been pointed out. While there is speculation that Ganguly may be asked to explain his stance at the AGM on December 24, TOI learned that the former captain of India is very clear about his position on the issue of conflict of interest.
Sources close to Ganguly said he had to decline offers from an online education app, a giant automaker, and a company that runs a IPL team in recent months after becoming president. All of these brands are central sponsors of BCCI.
Brands confirmed the development. “We wanted to tie Ganguly as a former captain and leader and we were in talks with him. However, the association did not happen as the application is a sponsor of the Indian cricket team“said a company official. An official from the automaker also confirmed that Ganguly declined their deal as the company was a central sponsor of the IPL.
Ganguly had been associated with JSW as a board member when the company entered IPL with Delhi Capitals in 2019. Sources at JSW confirmed that he had resigned from his position immediately following his appointment as president. However, he was hired for some independent filming.
The sponsors of the IPL title have no objection to Ganguly’s association with his rivals
The title sponsors of IPL Dream 11, a fantasy sports app, said they have no problem with Ganguly endorsing their rival app. “This is an internal matter for BCCI. We have no comment. Our contract with BCCI is clear and has nothing to do with personal endorsements,” he added. Rough Jain , CEO and co-founder of Dream11, said.
