New Delhi: Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam decided to continue his stay in Dubai with his wife and son amid the deadly novel coronavirus outbreak that has become a hot topic on Twitter right now. Why? Well, the singer, who is no longer on Twitter, became a top trend after his old and controversial tweets resurfaced.

Sonu Nigam in 2017 had tweeted about Azaan and drew people’s religious anger over it. He had expressed his displeasure at the noise from Azaan’s speakers and called it “forced religiosity” in the country.

Now, three years later, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the singer is in Dubai and netizens have inundated Twitter with screenshots of his old tweets, calling it irony.

Sonu Nigam’s wife and son stay in Dubai while he studies there, but his father and sister reside in India. The singer, who was heading to Dubai for a short time, had to continue his stay there after the pandemic broke out and he, as a precautionary measure, decided not to return and stay wherever he is.

He had deactivated his Twitter account in 2017 alleging disrespect for freedom of expression. In a series of tweets, he mentioned why he feels everyone is ‘angry’ at the microblogging site and ‘one-sided’.
