NEW DELHI: Congress President Sonia Gandhi On Saturday he met a group of party leaders who had written to him a few months ago asking for a complete reform of the organization.
This is the first time that Gandhi has met with congressional leaders in person since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
Rahul Gandhi will also attend the meeting.
The meeting also includes some of Sonia Gandhi’s close associates and is the first effort by the Congress leadership to reach out to those who raised questions about leadership.
Attendees of the meeting among the letter writers are the leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, the deputy leader of the party in the upper house Anand Sharma, former senior ministers Bhupinder Singh Hooda, former CM Prithviraj Chavan from Maharashtra, and MPs Manish Tewari, Vivek Tankha and Shashi Tharoor.
Former Madhya Pradesh Prime Minister Kamal Nath and senior leader P Chidambaram are also part of the meeting, sources said.
Among those loyal to Sonia in the discussion that will include a variety of topics, primarily organizational elections, are AK Antony, Ambika Soni, Ashok Gehlot and Harish Rawat, plus Pawan Bansal.
Sources said a number of organizational issues are likely to be discussed at the meeting.
Congress has already decided to hold elections for the office of president of Congress and that process is underway.
Sonia Gandhi will meet with other leaders in the coming days, the sources said.
