The Galaxy S20 Ultra has done very well, surprising even Samsung. However, it is understandable, as it is a really excellent device. However, now a new bug has been discovered, which messes up the honeymoon a bit for those who got the Exynos 990 version.

A green tint appeared on the screen under specific conditions, and judging from the moment it was caused by the latest OTA update. The good news is that a reboot fixes it, but the bad news is that it may reappear.

Unhappy users on Samsung’s support threads are still trying to determine exactly what triggers the green tint. So far, most report that the problem occurs when they use a high refresh rate mode. However, the behavior apparently only manifests itself in certain apps like Samsung Pay, Camera, Calculator, Snapchat, Telegram, PUBG: Mobile, and Chrome.

A different set of reports could offer some better clues to what is happening. It seems that the green tint tends to activate when the screen changes from 120Hz or 96Hz, back to 60Hz, within certain applications. This may be because the app itself does not support a high refresh rate and automatically turns off the screen or when other hardware conditions are met, such as the phone’s temperature rising above 40 degrees or the battery dropping below 5%. These also return the screen to 60Hz. Also, apparently, the tint is only really visible in brightness settings below 30%. And let’s not forget, at the moment only Exynos 990 S20 Ultra units have been featured in these reports.

Clearly, the exact set of conditions for error to manifest is far from clear and well defined at this point. This can probably explain why Samsung support has not yet recognized the problem and only offers generic answers to users on a case-by-case basis. Things like clearing the cache of affected apps and rebooting the phone. Hopefully, the community will be able to identify the cause of the problem soon so that a solution can be delivered.
