OnePlus 8 Pro sales don’t open until 29, but preorders are already coming, and we’ve already heard reports of issues with the phone’s display. As mentioned in our review, complaints cover a range, which includes shredded / cropped blacks, low-brightness irregularities / “green tint” issues, image retention, and even lines that appear around the camera crop. Fortunately, OnePlus tells us that it is aware of the problem reports and is working on software solutions for some of them.
Android Police readers may remember our review of the OnePlus 8 Pro, where I mentioned some of these issues when I experienced them on our own device. While some of the problems, such as low gloss uniformity, are an almost universal problem with all OLED-equipped phones, and simply the result of the so-called “lottery” of the display panel, others like squashed / cropped blacks can probably be fixed (or at least reduced) with the software.

While some user complaints so far have mirrored ours, other issues have also emerged, such as short-term image retention issues and strange dark horizontal lines appearing at the level of the screen’s camera clipping. While my screen was apparently free of those issues, David Ruddock of AP has experienced image retention on his device.

Some report that the visibility of these issues changes depending on the display settings, such as resolution and refresh rate, with lower or non-adaptive settings that supposedly reduce the visibility of the issues in some cases. DC dimming can also mitigate Some of these problems, but it presents more of its own, like crushed blacks.
OnePlus tells us that they are aware of these reports and that they are already planning solutions for some of these problems:
OnePlus values user feedback and is committed to delivering the best smartphone experience. Our team is currently investigating these reports to identify the best solutions for our users, and we will issue updates as soon as they are ready.
The so-called “green tint” problem will be fixed in the next OTA, and an update in May will offer a solution for squashed / clipped blacks, although it is not yet known if the other problem with the display lines around the Clip can be fix.
When it comes to showing uniformity on dark / low-gloss themes at night, we may not be lucky. Historically, issues like that are only part of how OLED panels work and boil down to the screen you get. Even my iPhone 11 Pro Max has some uniformity issues with certain backgrounds at night.
