Slogans, songs and drums as hundreds of farmers gather at a protest site in Delhi

New Delhi:

Shouting slogans, singing songs and carrying red, green and blue flags, some 400 farmers from various groups and states of Satuuday gathered on the Burari field in north Delhi, where the government had allowed them to hold a peaceful protest against the new agricultural laws.

As thousands of farmers sat at various border points in Delhi for the third day in a row, many made their way to the national capital and gathered at the Nirankari field, one of the largest in the city.

The farmers, mostly from Punjab and Haryana and also from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, arrived by trucks and tractors.

Slogans like “Dharti Mata Ki Jai“Y”Inquilab Zindabad“It could be heard from different parts of the vast and dusty terrain. While some peasant leaders made speeches, peasants danced to the beat of drums and the chords of”Hum Honge KaamyabIt could also be heard.

Amid the joyous cacophony of farmers who said they were determined to make their point, members of Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sangharsh Samanvay Samiti began chorus of “Chahe Kuch Bhi Karlo Hum Badhte Jaenge“.

The gurdwara Bangla Sahib established a ‘langar’ to feed the protesters. The Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi had also provided food. An electronic rickshaw moved spreading awareness about the COVID-19 pandemic and the importance of wearing masks.

“The unprecedented unity of the farmers will pressure the government to withdraw the three acts against the farmers,” social activist Medha Patkar, who was in Burari with a group of men and women, told NDTV.

He said it was a decentralized movement and that the protest was against “vulgar inequality” in the country.

Farmers protesting the Center’s three farm laws have expressed fear that the laws would pave the way for the dismantling of the minimum support price system, leaving them at the “mercy” of large corporations.
