Who is the greatest player of all-time?
It’s the age-old question that football fans have been attempting to answer for years.
The same three or four names always crop up in these discussions.
The older generation may argue the likes of Diego Maradona or Pele are the greatest to have ever played the game.
While younger fans will no doubt suggest there isn’t anyone better than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who have dominated football for more than a decade.
Well, that question was posed to four Sky Sports pundits this morning.
Let’s take a look at their picks:
Graeme Souness
“Messi and Ronaldo are top because of longevity and the leagues they’ve played in. I say to my son, who is a football nut, enjoy this. I’ve been saying it for 10 years. Players like this don’t come along in every generation. They are so far ahead. “
Jamie Redknapp
“I spent all weekend changing my mind, but the only one that hasn’t changed is number one. It has to be Pele. He’s the only man to have won three World Cups. As a 17-year-old, in 1958, I’ve scored one in the quarter-final, a hat-trick in the semi-final and two in the final. For me, I’ve transcended football. “
Paul Merson
“When I was growing up, it was that era of watching football, and Maradona went to Napoli, which was in the hardest league in the world at the time. You got kicked from pillar to post, it was defensive-minded, where it was hard to score goals, and I’ve taken them to win the league. “
Alan Smith
“It is difficult. We are all going to put Messi and Ronaldo in. Then how do you compare different eras and different generations? But with Messi and Ronaldo, it’s the longevity as much as anything else. The number of years they’ve played at the very top and the very top of their respective games. The goal output has just been staggering. “
Conclusion
So, there are only three players that feature in all four lists – Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
But with two No.1 selections – and not being placed lower than third place – it seems Messi is most favored by the Sky Sports pundits. Interestingly, Ronaldo is put one place lower than Messi in all four selections. It’s as if they always come as a pair but Messi is always just ahead – like he is in terms of Ballon d’Or wins.
But football is a game of opinions and it’s unlikely that no two fans will totally agree when picking the top five players of all-time.
