At least 14 people, including 6 children, were killed after the car they were traveling in collided with a stopped truck on the Lucknow-Allahabad highway in the Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, police said.
The victims were returning from a wedding in the Nawabganj area of Pratapgarh, said Awanish Awasthi, the home’s additional senior secretary. The identities of the deceased have yet to be determined.
In a statement, Pratapgarh (SP) Police Superintendent Anurag Arya said: “On November 19 at around 11:45 pm, under the boundaries of the Manikpur Police Station on the Prayagraj-Lucknow highway, information was received about a accident between an SUV and a truck. After the information was received, the Circle Officer (Kunda) arrived at the scene with the police force. The police team removed five bodies from the truck. After that, a JCB machine was used to pull the SUV out from under the truck and a rescue operation was started. Nine more bodies were removed from the SUV. In the tragic accident, a total of 14 people died. There are eight men between the ages of 20 and 60 and there are six boys who are between the ages of 7 and 15. All the bodies have been taken to the Community Health Center, Kunda, where autopsy procedures are being carried out … ”
On the reason for the accident, the SP said: “Based on the investigation so far, it appears that on the Lucknow-Prayagraj highway, there is a place called Deshraj ka Inara where the central tire of the truck was punctured and therefore parked at side of the road and at the same time, the truck came from behind and collided with the truck. Half of the truck got stuck under the truck. Due to the collision, all 14 people in the SUV died. All the deceased belonged to the Jirgapur village under the Kunda police station. They were returning from a wedding ceremony in Sheikhapur under the Nawabganj police station … ”
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his regret over the accident and ordered senior officials to arrive at the scene and provide all possible help to the victims, a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office said. A compensation of Rs 2 lakh has been announced to the closest relatives.
