At least six cases of shigella infection and 20 other suspected cases, mainly among children, have been reported in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, health officials said. An 11-year-old boy, who allegedly died from the bacterial infection last week, is one of the suspected cases.

Shigella infection is caused by a family of bacteria called shigella with symptoms of diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. Some people may not experience any symptoms. If diarrhea and other symptoms persist for more than three days, it is advisable to consult a doctor. The bacterial infection is transmitted by contaminated food and water.

In Kozhikode, infections have been mainly limited to the Kottaparambu ward within corporate boundaries. The corporation’s health officials plan to hold a medical camp over the weekend.

Kozhikode District Medical Officer Dr. Jayasree V said stool sample results from six patients at the Medical College hospital confirmed shigella infection, and another 20 were considered suspicious cases with minor symptoms.

Unlike normal diarrhea, people with shigella infection are likely to see stronger symptoms and a faster worsening of their medical condition, he said.

Except for four adults, all the suspected cases are children. All but one or two have been discharged from the hospital after treatment.
