Karnataka witnessed a flood-like situation aggravated on Thursday at a time when northern Karnataka flooded after leaking water from major dams and torrential rains.
According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Center, the gates of the main dams were opened, causing water to gush into villages and form islands in different locations.
The Linganamakki, Supa, Varahi, Harangi, Hemavathi, Krishna Raja Sagar, Kabini, Bhadra, Tungabhadra, Ghataprabha, Malaprabha, Almatti and Narayanapura, were filled to the brim.
The worst affected areas include: Yadgir, Raichur, Ballari, Bidar, Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Belagavi, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Gadag, Koppal, Haveri and Dharwad.
The Bhima River has caused destruction in Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts after it was flooded and the water level in the Krishna River at Devasugur in Raichur district is rising to an alarming level.
The Central Water Commission warned of the rising water level of the Bhima River at the Deongaon Bridge in Kalaburagi’s Afzalpur Taluk and said “it is expected to cross the danger level tonight.”
The Commission has also said that the flow of the Kagna Malkhed River in Kalaburagi district is alarming despite declining water levels.
Up to 515 animals lost their lives, while 4,782 people have been transferred to 36 relief camps opened by the district administration, according to sources from the Karnataka Disaster Management Authority.
The Bidar and Vijayapura district authorities have opened relief camps for people affected by the floods.
The NDRF team rescued people stranded in Haragadde, Karakalagadde in Raichur on the temporary island due to the sudden release of water from the dam on the other side of the Krishna river due to the rising level.

This is the third wave of flooding in the state in the last three months.
The core team has surveyed rain-related damage in various parts of the state when flooding was reported in August and September.
Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa called a review meeting via videoconference with deputy commissioners and senior officials from the flood-affected districts on Friday, the ANI said.
After the ministers in charge of the district visit the respective locations and give the reports, the compensation and funds needed for the rehabilitation will be released soon, he added.
