NEW DELHI: Delhi police on Saturday arrested a wanted high-ranking member of the banned group, the Islamic Students Movement of India (SIMI), who had been on the run for more than 19 years.
Danish Abdullah (58), who was wanted in a 2001 sedition case, lately took pleasure in radicalizing young Muslims to mobilize them to protest against the National Register of Citizens and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and propagate radical radical ideology to create Discord between religious groups, Deputy Police Commissioner (Delhi Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwah said on Sunday.
Delhi police said they were falsely spreading that the Center was committing atrocities against Muslims through the use of fake videos.
Kushwah added that Danish has been one of the most elusive SIMI members for the past 19 years.
According to a statement by the Delhi police, a lower court found Danish a criminal in the sedition and illicit activity case in 2002.
The case concerns a raid during a press conference by SIMI officials near its headquarters in Jamia Nagar, Delhi, despite being banned by the Center in 2001. Many SIMI members were arrested, but several cadres fled of the place. Incriminating material and provocative literature were recovered in the form of SIMI (Islamic Movement) magazines, audio / videos on floppy disks, posters, computers and photo albums, police said.
According to the statement, he joined the SIMI in 1985. As a member of the SIMI, the Dane has been continuously propagating unconditional Islamic ideology and attracting gullible Muslim youth to join by radicalizing / brainwashing them. He remained the editor-in-chief of the Hindi Islamic Movement for four years, the statement said.
