With Madhya Pradesh heading into the by-elections of the Legislative Assembly in September, Prime Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently took to Twitter to investigate the Congress Party.

On Saturday, veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader took to Twitter to play a double-meaning pun to confuse the Congress Party.

“Elections will be held in many places in the country, including Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Karnataka. We have to take full care of the Electoral Commission guidelines in view of the Crown term,” Chouhan wrote in Hindi. While the tweet seemed pretty regular, the last line stole the show.

In accordance with Covid-19 regulations, Chouhan asked residents and voters in Madhya Pradesh to completely “disinfect” the “hand” and wash it completely. “Haath ko puri tarah disinfects kar dena hai,” he wrote.

Didn’t you get it? “Haath” or hand is also the party symbol of the Congress Party, which forms the main opposition of the BJP in MP.

So while Chouhan’s double meaning served as a coronavirus advisory, it was also a spike for the Opposition.

Chouhan seized power from Kamal Nath in Congress, who resigned as Chief Minister in March earlier this year after a government breakdown in the wake of an internal rebellion.

A seasoned political veteran, this is Chouhan’s fourth term as MP CM. However, Congress is not taking the crucial by-elections lightly. According to recent reports, Nath has engaged the former rebel leader of the Rajasthan Congress, Sachin Pilot, to campaign for the party in the Chambal-Gwalior MP belt, areas that are traditionally strongholds of the BJP.

Meanwhile, the dates for the by-elections to 28 legislative seats will be announced on September 29.

The upcoming by-elections in Madhya Pradesh are not general elections, but they will determine the future of the state, Nath said early last month. In August, the congressional leader and opposition leader in MP said that he has been working to strengthen his party in the last four months and that the fight was not with the achievements of the BJP, but with his organization.
