Mumbai:
Shiv Sena leader Pratap Sarnaik filed a notice of breach of special privileges against actor Kangana Ranaut after she tweeted saying that a Pakistani credit card was recovered during searches conducted by the Directorate of Enforcement. The MLA has asked the Chief Secretary to send his notice to the Privilege Committee for action to be taken against the actor.
Sarnaik was interrogated by the Directorate of Enforcement for more than six hours about an alleged money laundering case last week. His properties were registered by the agency last month.
The case came after Ramesh Iyyer, a former Tops Group employee, alleged that in 2014, following a contract with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority to supply 350 to 500 security guards, the company provided only 70 percent of the agreed number. Some of the money paid by the MMRDA went to the defendants’ private accounts, he said.
The Shiv Sena has described the measure of the Directorate of Execution as the result of a political revenge. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said: “The central agencies are working as if they are domestic helpers of the Center … People are smart and they are watching these developments.”
Earlier, during the monsoon session of the Maharashtra Assembly, a motion of privilege was filed in the Legislative Council against the actor for his comments comparing Mumbai to Pakistani-occupied Kashmir.
Recently, multiple complaints have been filed against Ms. Ranaut for her tweets.
A Punjab-based lawyer sent legal notice to the actor for allegedly misidentifying an elderly woman at the farmers’ protest in the national capital as Bilkis Bano, who made headlines during the Shaheen Bagh protests as the “Shaheen Bagh dadi“.
The actor’s tweet, where he said the woman was “available for 100 rupees”, suggesting that she may be hired to attend the protests, has also offended the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, which has asked for an unconditional apology.
