Speaking to ANI, Dhawan shed light on his brilliant form, the atmosphere in DC’s dressing room, 10 years in the international Cricket and most importantly in the next series against Australia.
He started with a par 20 and is now the only hitter in IPL to have scored two consecutive centuries. Dhawan says he doesn’t like reacting to outside noise.
“I like to be happy, I don’t like stress. Firstly what people say doesn’t reach my ears and I don’t want to hear what is being said and secondly, I love to play and it gives me joy. I know the hard work I have done and how fit I am and the preparations I have made. I have full faith in myself that whatever I touch, I will turn it to gold, “he smiled.
Starting slowly, Dhawan says he had a word with head coach Ricky Ponting, who said he was hitting the ball well and that’s the important thing.
“Ricky bhai said he was hitting well and he knew he wanted to play a little bit fast. I had a discussion about that with him too. I was happy with the 20s and 30s because they were shocking. What matters in the T20s is how important those are. 30 runs went. I thought I was playing the starter role. By the time I reached fifty, I gained in confidence and then, by the grace of God, I wrote down the centuries, “he explained.
Dhawan says numbers don’t matter to him to be honest.
“If I keep thinking of scoring centuries, I will get overwhelmed. My idea is to go out and do my best. If I do my best, the rest will come. That also helps me to stay mentally light. Add to my expectations?
“Going into the first games of the season, I wasn’t fifty or anything, so 500 runs on the season seemed like a distant dream. But I’ve been scoring 500 in the last few seasons, so instead of using it as a pressure scenario , I looked at it positively and thought it is good if I achieve it, otherwise I will try to do my best for the team. The idea is to keep it simple and be disciplined. Simple is not as simple as it sounds, you also need to be mentally strong. ” He said.
The starter feels that DC management has done a great job ensuring the team is a happy unit on and off the field.
“When the team is doing well, it is a good sign and everyone is participating. It is important that the team management support the players, as that brings a sense of security, and I think we have great support and management staff. and that has ensured that we are a very happy unit. That is what you can see on and off the pitch, “he said.
Dhawan has also completed a decade in international cricket. When asked if he thought he’d get that far when he started, the cricketer says dreams keep changing and it’s been a fun ride.
“You know dreams change over time. When I started, the thought would play U16, then U19, then India and so on. Fortunately, by the grace of God, my wishes have come true. I thought I had the potential and I have tried to give my best. My idea is that the day I leave, I have nothing left to give, “he smiled.
Commenting on the Australian series that follows, Dhawan said: “I’ll think about it when the time comes. It takes 10-15 minutes to think about it. When you have experience, you’ve gone and done well, you have that confidence in yourself. “. . I’m sure I’ll go and do well there. ”
The pandemic has also created a scenario where players must be in a bubble and follow strict protocols. Dhawan says the happy mood at the DC camp has helped.
“What a person thinks is what counts. If you look at it and think it’s difficult, it will be. But I look at it and I think I can do so many things and focus on my hobbies. I seek to enjoy myself and while I love my family, I have been used to traveling since childhood. Just have fun and wait for the days of the games, “he concluded.
