S&P BSE Sensex started trading at 44,325 points, while the 50-share Nifty was above 13,000, but the indices soon gave up gains to trade flat and then fell. Sensex’s top winners include NTPC, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki India, and Asian Paints. In red were Power Grid, TCS, and Reliance Industries. The broader markets were outperforming the benchmarks. India VIX or the volatility indicator fell 7%, falling below 18 levels. Asian pairs were largely upside-biased, KOSDAQ was up 1.06%, TOPIX gained 0.60% during the first hours of trading. SGX Nifty was trading flat.
India’s economic report card for the July-September quarter will be released later today. India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), after having plunged 23.9% in the first fiscal quarter, is expected to have recovered sequentially, helped by easing of restrictions and the reactivation of other macro indicators. The RBI expects GDP to have contracted 8.6% during the previous quarter, while Morgan Stanley has projected a 6% drop. The rating agencies ICRA and Care Ratings expect a contraction of 9.5% and 9.9%, respectively.
