Despite Laxmii being widely criticized after release, actor Sharad Kelkar’s extended cameo was one of the few aspects of the film that was appreciated. Sharad appears in the film as a trans person named Laxmi, whose tragic backstory is the heart and soul of the film.
In an interview, Sharad spoke about the challenges of taking on the role, which many rejected and whose ‘review’ meant the most to him. He told Pinkvilla: “I think it’s a mixed review. It’s a great movie, a lot of effort has been put into it. The kind of response the movie is getting and Mr. Akshay, I’m very happy with it. “
He said that he values his wife’s opinion more and described her as ‘my partner, my guru’ and the only person who has taught him the ‘basics of acting’. He said: “She saw the movie and she was crying and she hugged me saying she was proud of me. I think that was it. That was the biggest compliment to me. “
In a previous interview with the Hindustan Times, Sharad had said: “I have read various reactions and many people have been critical. But I have to say, it feels good to read the comments of people who talk about their performance. “
Previously, star Akshay Kumar had addressed negative reviews, saying that he makes films for audiences and not critics. He had told Mid-Day in an interview: “I feel great. I know a lot of critics don’t like my films and I get it. But my focus is on my audience. I have been told that it is the biggest opening of my career. The film accomplishes something fundamental. Having a transgender protagonist normalizes and reinforces the rights of the LGBTQ community ”. He said he strives to make films that make an impact on audiences.
