When COVID-19 infections in paramilitary forces crossed the 500 mark, Interior Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with the heads of all forces on Friday and expressed concern. Suggestions made during the meeting to curb the spread of the infection include tents in the camps to increase distance and non-contact food service in the disaster.
The sources said that the system of living in the barracks hinders social distancing. The problem has been compounded by the fact that most infected staff are asymptomatic.
“It has been decided that where the barracks do not have enough space, the forces will install tents to guarantee social distancing,” said a paramilitary officer.
There would be significant changes in disorder management. “There will be different groups of people to cut and wash vegetables, and to cook and serve. Food will be served in shifts with fewer individuals allowed at one time, ”said another officer.
COVID-19 count in BSF hit 224 on Friday with 30 more new cases. At ITBP, 12 new cases brought the case count to 92. At CRPF, 162 cases have been reported and 38 CISF staff have so far been infected. On SSB, 14 people tested positive. Four paramilitaries have died so far.
A MHA statement said: “The Home Secretary asked about the situation regarding security personnel affected by COVID-19 in each of the CAPFs …”
The Director General of a paramilitary force said: “Our men are deployed in law and order tasks, some of them in containment areas, so infections are inevitable … The good thing is that our men are in shape … expecting a very high recovery rate. “
