SITAPUR: Seven people were detained under Uttar Pradeshnew anti-conversion law for allegedly kidnapping a Hindu girl from home in Sitapur district, police said Saturday.
The main defendant, whose brother and brother-in-law are among those arrested, is on the run, they said.
The incident took place on November 24. According to the girl’s mother, Jabrael has also been missing from the village since then, police said.
A case was registered in this regard on November 27, they said.
Additional Police Superintendent (Sitapur) Rajeev Dikshit said: “A case against eight people has been registered under the new anti-conversion law. Seven defendants have been arrested. Seven teams have been deployed and the main defendant will be captured soon.”
“There is an investigation underway, and if any negligence on the part of the police is found, it will be dealt with strictly,” he said.
Jabrael’s brother Israel and brother-in-law Usman are among those arrested, police said.
Governor of Uttar Pradesh Anandiben Patel on November 28, it gave its consent to the Uttar Pradesh Illegal Conversion of Religion Prohibition Ordinance, 2020, against forced or fraudulent religious conversions.
The law provides for prison terms of up to 10 years and a maximum fine of Rs 50,000 in different categories.
