Seven people died and at least 30 others were injured when a bus they were traveling in collided with an SUV in Puranpur in the Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.
Pilibhit Police Superintendent Jai Prakash said the bus was heading to Puranpur from Lucknow. “The bus rolled down the road into a nearby field after the collision. A total of 50 passengers were in both vehicles, of which seven were declared dead in a hospital and another 30 are injured ”.
Prakash said the accident appears to have occurred due to the negligence of the bus driver. “Some of the bus passengers have informed us that the bus driver did not see the van and collided with it. The matter will be investigated and action will be taken against the culprits, ”said Prakash, who visited the wounded in the hospitals where they were admitted.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered his condolences to the families of those killed in the accident and ordered officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured. He also announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia to each of the victims’ families.
According to police, the accident occurred near a blind turn on the road near Sehramau below the area of the Puranpur police station around 4 am. A local police team arrived at the scene in minutes and began rescue operations. The injured were rushed to Pilibhit hospital and the nearby Bareilly district.
